Noelle Szydlk, state director of the Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay is the featured speaker at the twenty-sixth Annual Meeting of the Friends of the Indiana State Archives on Tuesday, April 19, at the Indiana State Library, 315 West Ohio Street, Indianapolis.
A buffet luncheon and brief Friends business meeting will precede the presentation. The luncheon and meeting will begin at noon. The price of the luncheon is $16.00, payable at the door, but you must reserve a lunch in advance. Please call Barb Wood at 317-313-6561 or e-mail b.wood@att.net by April 10 for reservations. Checks should be made payable to FISA. Individuals may attend the talk at no cost.

Cynthia Hoye, Executive Director of the Indiana State Fair Commission, will be the featured speaker at the twenty-fifth Annual Meeting of the Freinds of the Indiana State Archives on Tuesday, April 14, at the Indiana State Library, 315 West Ohio Street, Indianapolis.
Cynthia Hoye has been a member of the Indiana State Fair Commission since 1988 and Executive Director since 2004. She will speak on “Memories in the Making–the historic renovation of the Indiana’s Farmers’ Coliseum”

Statehood Day, Thursday, December 11, 2014
Join the fun at Indiana’s 198th birthday party, Thursday morning, December 11th beginning at 9:00 A.M. State agencies–including the State Archives, will be on hand at their booths until 12:00 P.M. offering information and fun activities for hundreds of area 4th graders as they learn more about the history of their state. The official ceremony, featuring Governor Pence and the winner of the student’s essay competition, will begin at 12 and last until 1:00 P.M. During the program, Archives personnel, including State Archivist Jim Corridan and Dr. Alan January, will return Indiana’s constitutions to their display cases where they will remain until the end of the legislative session. Come help us celebrate! Just two more years until our bi-centennial celebration!
Christmas at the Capitol 2014
The Friends of the Indiana State Archives will once again sponsor Christmas at the Capitol at the State House, Friday, December 5th and Saturday, December 6th. Friday nights special guests are Governor Michael R. Pence and First Lady Karen Pence, who will welcome the audience to the program, which begins at 5:30 P.M. On Saturday, Lt. Governor Sue Ellspermann will begin the program at 1:00 P.M. Both musical programs will feature Indiana school choirs.
On Friday the Indianapolis Youth Chorale and the Trinity School from South Bend will perform.
Saturday brings Canterbury School from Fort Wayne and Southridge High School from Huntingburg.
Please plan to join the festivities and come listen to these wonderful performances.
The Friends have also donated the beautiful Christmas wreath, shown in the image above, which now hangs in the Capitol for the holiday season. Please see the brochure for more details.

Friends of the Archives Annual Meeting! April 15,2014
Chris Jensen will be the featured speaker at the twenty-forth Annual Meeting of the Friends of the Indiana State Archives on Tuesday, April 15, at the Indiana State Library, 315 West Ohio Street, Indianapolis.
Chris Jensen serves as Executive Director of Indianas 2016 Bicentennial Commission where he oversees the day to day operations of the upcoming celebration including fundraising, programming, outreach and government relations. Prior to his current role, Chris was Director of Intergovernmental Affairs for Lt. Governor Becky Skillman. In this role, Chris oversaw all the Lt. Governors legislative agenda as well as managed local government outreach.
Chris also served as a senior member of US Senator Dan Coats 2010 Senatorial campaign and has worked in the private sector for Roche Diagnostics. Chris is a Noblesville native and graduated from Butler University with a BA in Journalism in 2006.

“Christmas at the Capitol” a Musical Concert!
December 13, 2013, Tonight’s Christmas at the CapitolConcert will continue as planned! However, tomorrow’s event (Saturday, December 14, 2013) has been CANCELED due to the predicted inclement weather.
Tonight’s concert begins at 5:00 P.M. in the Statehouse. Governor Pence and the First Lady will attend.
INDIANAPOLIS (September 30, 2013) The Indiana State Archives will celebrate its centennial on October 1, 2013.
The State Archives first began operating on a part-time basis in 1906 under a reorganization plan. In 1913, House Enrolled Act 254 provided funding that allowed the State Archives to operate full time beginning on October 1. Through this Act, the Indiana General Assembly sought to preserve and protect the most valuable records of Indiana Government through the creation of a State Archives.
A century later, the Indiana State Archives continues to serve the noble goal of the preservation of records of Hoosier government. The State Archives maintains approximately 100,000 cubic feet of permanent records. Collections include the official papers of every previous governor, from territorial governor William Henry Harrison in 1800 to Mitchell E. Daniels. The State Archives also maintains the original House and Senate journals and acts from the territorial period to present day, as well as Indiana Supreme Court and Territorial Court records. Genealogists and researchers contact the State Archives to review records from closed state institutions, state agencies, and Hoosier veteran records from the territorial period to today.
To provide access and preserve the official records of Indiana is a high responsibility, and its great to honor the efforts of all those involved in this endeavor over the last 100 years, said Jim Corridan, Indianas eleventh State Archivist and third Director of the Commission on Public Records. There is much more that can and needs to be done to improve access and safeguard Indiana historical records, but today we celebrate the fact that they still exist.
The State Archives invites members of the media to visit between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Tuesday, October 1. Tours of the facility will be provided.
NAGARA Comes to Indianapolis, July 10-13, 2013
The NAGARA Annual Meeting will be held in Indianapolis, Indiana on July 10-13, 2013. The session topics will include: a judicial records in the digital age track; electronic records preservation track, including an electronic records research forum; a records management track, including updates on the NARA presidential directive; poster sessions; and more! Friends of the Archives Annual Meeting! April 9,2013
The Twenty-third Annual Meeting of the Friends of the State Archives will be held at noon at the Indiana State Library, Indianapolis, on Tuesday, April 9th, 2013. The luncheon speaker will be Curt Witcher.
The 2013 Annual Meeting and Lunch will be held on April 9th at noon at the Indiana State Library. Our speaker is Curt B. Witcher, the Department Manager for the Historical Genealogy Department and Senior Manager of Special Collections of the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, IN. He is also a member of the Genealogy Committee of the American Library Association. Living and Local: History in Our Hands is the topic and Witcher will discuss the challenges ahead of us in preserving living memory and local history and assess how we are meeting those challenges.

Women’s History Month Exhibit Returns to the State House
INDIANAPOLIS (March 5, 2013) The Indiana Statehouse is featuring a unique display celebrating Womens History Month in March. Women in Indiana Who Broke Barriers was designed by the Indiana State Archives and celebrates the life and work of four women who broke gender barriers in the Hoosier State. Those featured include:
Dr. Sarah Stockton (1842-1924), the first female physician at Central State Hospital in Indianapolis;
Emma Christy Baker (1865-1955), the first African-American woman to be an officer with the Indianapolis Police Department;
Antionette Dakin Leach (1859-1922), the first woman to challenge denial of admission to the Bar based on gender; and
Lovina Streight (1830-1910), who earned her title Mother of the Fifty-first by accompanying the Fifty-first Indiana Volunteer Infantry at battle and nursed the sick and dying.
The Women in Indiana Who Broke Barriers will be located in the fourth-floor South Atrium of the Statehouse and may be viewed during regular public hours.
The included image, on loan from the State Museum, is of a newly-installed portrait of Lovina Streight at the Statehouse. The portrait, alongside Indiana Civil War Governor Oliver Perry Morton, can be found on fourth-floor South Atrium wall.
